This study aims to examine the relationship between economic development and environmental degradation based on the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. The level of CO2 emissions is used as the indicator of environmental damage to determine whether or not greater economic growth can lower environmental degradation under the EKC hypothesis.

The environmental kuznets curve

In the last few years, several studies have found an inverted-U relationship between per capita income and environmental degradation. This relationship, known as the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC), suggests that environmental degradation increases in the early stages of growth, but it eventually decreases as income exceeds a threshold level. Environmental Kuznets curves have been estimated using a simple reduced-form model that gives no information on the mechanisms underlying the estimated inverted U-shaped relationship between some pollutants and income.

With higher rates of economic growth, people have more discretionary income after paying for Focus on living The environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is a well-established hypothesis in the literature of energy and environmental economics. While assessing the relationship between economic growth and environmental degradation, Grossman and Krueger (1991) found its resemblance with the findings of Simon Kuznets (1955) , and they named this association as the EKC hypothesis. It doesn’t operate at the level of global issues, the planetary boundaries, which are of course the most serious. It can be seen in pollution in particular, but to extrapolate across the whole spectrum of ecology would be a big mistake. The environmental Kuznets curve posits an inverted-U relationship between pollution and economic development. Pessimistic critics of empirically estimated curves have argued that their declining portions are illusory, either because they are cross-sectional snapshots that mask a long-run "race to the bottom" in environmental standards, or because industrial societies will continually produce new pollutants as the old ones are controlled. This is proof, he says, of the Environmental Kuznets Curve, where impacts rise with GDP up to a point, and then begin to decline as GDP continues to go up.

In the early stages of economic growth, pollution emissions increase and environmental quality declines, but beyond some level of per capita income (which will vary for different indicators) the trend reverses, so that at high income levels, economic growth leads to environmental improvement. Causes of Environmental Kuznets curve Empirical evidence of declining pollution levels with economic growth. Studies found that higher economic growth in the Spare income with growth.
